Press Release for PLATES

PLATES “Origin of Flesh” is Karen Hsiao’s newest body of work. These PLATES are morphological studies of the architecture in organisms and the human body. Her subjects undergo the influence of physical and moral modifications both in respect of its euphoric and aesthetic qualities. The subject conforms and shapes their body to a secondary layer of skin, infusing living tissue into inanimate intercellular substances adapting themselves into rare and valuable specimens.

First of many finished pieces for my two person show with Louis Fleischauer in Japan this coming July 8-16 2010. It's crazy how in Japan most galleries only show their artist for two weeks on their off seasons (winter and fall), but in the summer, they only show them for one week. I have a good amount done for the show, but I'm working on doing more.

EYEMAZING magazine's current issue features Karen Hsiao's Rubber Duck

I just received this in the mail today!! EYEMAZING magazine did a wonderful 8 page spread on my upcoming book, Karen Hsiao : Rubber Duck, with text by Sashi Wasserman. 

EYEMAZING is a Lucie Awards Winner for Best Photography Magazine of the year. They are also one of my favorite contemporary photo magazines out there. www.EYEMAZING.com

In this shot I used my cousin, Jennifer Hsiao for the "My first Fight" Chapter. I did all the makeup for her bruises.

On the leftt is my friend Tina, wearing FierceCouture Latex and an AMF eyepatch. The right is my friend Vima.

Left is model Katya wearing Baby Loves Latex with makeup by LB Benson, posing as her double (not easy to do in post). On the right is Jade, inspired by Trevor Brown's iconic "Little Miss Sticky Kiss".

Updated Kellie Piece for Tokyo's show

My first pass at Kellie, and I really liked it. I'm going to work into it more over the weekend along with 5 other pieces I've started. All pieces are mix mediums, painted mostly with oil and wax. I will have more updates on my two person show in Japan soon.
