Mit den Arbeiten der in Los Angeles lebenden Chinesin Karen Hsiao setzt die Galerie eine Reihe von Ausstellungen zeitgenössischer Fotografie fort, die über eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Vielschichtigkeit menschlicher Affekte die Sehnsüchte und Grenzen körperlicher und geistiger Existenz auslotet.Zu sehen ist eine Serie aussergewöhnlicher Porträtfotografien. Bereits aufgrund der Eigenheiten des jeweiligen Modells besteht eine gewisse Spannbreite von Affekten, die über Frisur, Mimik oder Haltung noch betont werden und von frech über sinnlich bis hin zu berauscht oder sogar draufgängerisch reichen. Mittels der starken Reduktion der Szene und malerischen Überdeckung des Hintergrundes erzeugt Hsiao eine Ästhetik, die erst beim zweiten Blick einen ungleich grösseren Raum von Interpretationsmöglichkeiten eröffnet: Im Mund jedes Modells finden sich ganze oder Teile von Früchten oder Gemüsen. Diese anfänglich bizarr anmutende Fixierung auf den Mund gibt sich bei eingehenderer Auseinandersetzung als spannende und mehrdeutige Öffnung in eine weit tiefergehende Welt zu erkennen. Wie die Künstlerin selbst äussert begreift sie ihren Mund als wichtigsten Weg der Intimität, er sei das Organ, das alle Formen von seelischer Bewegung äussern könne und zugleich die wichtigste Pforte für lebenserhaltende Stoffe und Genuss bilde. Hsiao führt damit auf das Feld des Freudschen „Lustprinzips“, das Streben des Menschen nach der Erfüllung physischer und psychischer Bedürfnisse, welches das Verhalten durch positiv empfundene Erfahrungen konditioniert. In der ersten, oralen Phase der kindlichen Entwicklung erfolgt die Erfassung dieser Umwelt primär über den Mund. Essen, trinken und saugen sind in diesem Zusammenhang die ersten natürlichen Äusserungen des Strebens nach Befriedigung. Dadurch wird auch deutlich, dass es sich bei der frühkindlichen Entdeckung der Welt mit dem Mund gleichzeitig um eine Phase des Erwachens und Vortastens handelt. Hsiao verweist auf ihre Heimat China, wo dieses Erwachen insbesondere bei den Frauen noch nicht überall stattgefunden habe. Denn konterkariert wird die natürliche Entfaltung des subjektiven Luststrebens durch die wachsende Erfassung und Anpassung an die jeweiligen äusseren Umstände. Der konkrete Blick auf die Fotografien kann demzufolge je nach gesellschaftlichem Umfeld sehr unterschiedlich gefärbt sein und verschiedenste Seiten des Unbewussten und Unterschwelligen hervorrufen. Aus einer distanzierten und mit Los Angeles als Basis hoch progressiven Perspektive stellt Hsiao auf diese Weise das mit dem Kulturkreis variierende „Realitätsprinzip“ zur Disposition. Der Frucht fällt darüber hinaus eine Schlüsselrolle in vielerlei narrativen Zusammenhängen zu. In allem Anfang war es der Verzehr einer verbotenen Frucht, der als exemplarischer Sündenfall nach Freud gar zum Beginn sozialer Organisation, Religion, sittlicher Beschränkung und damit der Kultur überhaupt führte. Verstärkt werden entsprechende Bezüge durch die symbolischen Facetten von Früchten. Ihre Anbringung birgt dabei ein ganzes Feld von Bedeutungen in der Bandbreite von religiösem bis hin zu sexuellem Fetisch. Bereits in der antiken Mythologie wurden Früchte mit Völlerei und Überfluss in Verbindung gebracht. In diesem Kontext erscheint auch das Füllhorn, das bei Hsiao in der Art der Anbringung eines Broccoli oder Austernpilzes anklingt. Das Füllhorn ist ein Symbol des Glücks und steht für Fruchtbarkeit, Reichtum und Überfluss. Ähnliches gilt für die Feige, die eine der ältesten Kulturpflanzen der Menschen ist und sich bis in die Kreidezeit zurückzuverfolgen lässt. Als ihr Entdecker gilt der Mythologie der Antike nach Dionysos, der Gott des Weines, der Freude, der Fruchtbarkeit und der Ekstase. Diesem Themenkreis entspricht auch der Austernpilz, der nicht zuletzt in der Traumdeutung für Unmoral steht. In ihm verbindet sich zudem die Ambivalenz von lebensspendendem und rausch- oder sogar todbringendem Aspekt, weshalb man ihn eigentlich nicht in roher Form zu sich nehmen sollte.

Die Ausstellung zeigt 31 kleinformatige Arbeiten Hsiaos in einer Größe zwischen 10,5 x 10,5 cm und 32 x 61 cm. Zugrunde liegen ihnen C-prints, die mittels Aufbringung auf eine Holzkonstruktion und durch mehrfache Überziehung mit Harz die optische Qualität dreidimensionaler Objekte verliehen bekommen.

The works of Los Angeles-based Chinese artist Karen Hsiao mark a continuation in the gallery’s contemporary photography exhibition series examining the characteristic of longing and the boundaries of physical and spiritual existence via an exploration of the broad range of human emotions. On exhibit is a series of exceptional photographed portraits. The individual characteristics of the respective models they portray already lend the portraits a certain degree of emotional variation. These differences are emphasized in the hairdo, facial expression and posture of those portrayed and reach all the way from insolent and sensuous to intoxicated, even aggressive. Hsiao’s strong scenic reductionism and the way she covers over the background creates an aesthetic that discloses a disproportionately larger arena of possible interpretations, particularly once the viewer discovers upon closer examination that each model’s mouth contains either a whole piece of fruit or a vegetable or a bite from them. Hsiao’s fixation on the mouth in these works, at first seemingly strange, reveals itself upon further study to be a fascinating, multilayered inquiry into a much deeper world. Hsiao states that she herself sees her mouth as the most important path to intimacy, the one organ that can express the wide variety of ways her soul is moved while at the same time serving as the capstone of life-sustaining intake and enjoyment. With that, Hsiao forays into the field of the Freudian “pleasure principle,” the human pursuit of the fulfillment of physical and psychological needs in which behavior is conditioned by experiences felt as positive. In the first, oral phase of childhood development, humans come to understand their surroundings primarily via the mouth. Eating, drinking and sucking, within this context, are the first natural expressions of the pursuit of satisfaction – also clearly demonstrating that this early childhood discovery of the world with the mouth simultaneously serves as a foretaste and a phase of awakening. Hsiao makes reference to her homeland, China, where this awakening, particularly among women, has not yet taken place at a widespread level; the natural unfolding of a subjective pursuit of pleasure is thwarted by the individual’s growing recognition of and assimilation into the respective surroundings. Hence, depending on the society that surrounds viewers of these photographs, their concrete perspective on the photographs can be influenced by many different factors, and the works can call forth a wide array of unconscious and subliminal reactions. From her more distant perspective, with Los Angeles serving as the frame of reference for her highly progressive perspective, Hsiao thus begins negotiations with the “reality principle,” one which varies in relation to each respective culture. Fruit also plays a key role in a large number of related narratives. In the beginning, it was the consumption of a forbidden fruit that served as the prototypical symbol of the fall of mankind and that, according to Freud, even marked the beginning of social organization, religion, the limitations of social mores and hence culture itself. Corresponding references to this are underscored using the multifaceted symbolic meanings assigned to fruits, which encompass a broad range of meanings reaching from the religious to sexual fetish. Already in ancient mythology, fruits were associated with overindulgence and abundance. It is in this context that the cornucopia, hinted at in Hsiao’s works with broccoli and oyster mushrooms, makes its appearance. A symbol of good luck, the cornucopia also stands for fertility, wealth and abundance. The same is true of the fig, which, as one of the oldest cultivated plants known to mankind, can be traced all the way back to the Cretaceous period. Mythology attributes its discovery to Dionysius, the god of wine, joy, fertility and ecstasy. These themes are common to the oyster mushroom as well, which is also often regarded in the field of dream interpretation as representative of immorality. The oyster mushroom unites an inherent ambivalence within itself, too, navigating a tenuous balance between its life-giving aspects and those that bring about intoxication and even death – good reasons why it should not be eaten in its raw form.

Artist Statement for ORAL FIXATION

Phase one of my psychosexual development installation denotes my oral fixation obsession. To me the mouth is the first passage into the depths of intimacy and the most accessible. It is also the largest representation of who I am, how I feel and what I need. I live through my mouth, talking, biting, sucking and swallowing. I use it as a way to express affection, inflict pain and ensure pleasure. My mouth, lips and tongue are the means to my inside.

This entire installation is about oral and social cravings, the desire to feed our mouths and to gratify ourselves. The herbs, fruits and vegetables placed in the individual’s mouth represent sexual awakening, the start of an appetite. Because the objects are not entirely inserted into the mouths they only act as a momentary medicine to reduce tension and provide minimally nourishing stimulants. It is also used to block the individual’s mouth to insure the elimination of any discourse.

The main installation consists of only Chinese females who are defiant to stereotypical Asian submissive women, social rules, repressed needs and oppression. They are, essentially, representations of me, yet I purposely did not use myself as a subject for this particular installation because phase one of my oral fixations is not about a mirrored image of the self, it’s about my relationship within the world. These women are my friends and blood relatives. I know each of them personally. They are strong-willed, nontraditional, not conservative, nor are they afraid to address socially unspeakable topics and stubbornly do not believe sex is only for the purpose of bearing children like most older traditional Chinese women. This is the first contemporary series I’ve created and perhaps the most personal. The smaller installations were preliminaries to the main installation.

My Louisiana trip

A sneak preview of my Rubber Duck Book!

Here it is! A sneak preview of my Karen Hsiao : Rubber Duck book!! Bob my publisher of Baby Tattoo books, was kind enough to let me borrow the only advance copy he had for me to photograph. Sadly I must return it to him tomorrow evening. Nevertheless, I got to see it first hand and shoot a couple of quick shots for my blog. The white cover on the left is the limited edition copy, only 250 will ever be made and the black cover on the right is the open edition. The books will be sold through my website www.karenhsiao.com and www.babytatoo.com, my online store will (I hope) be up and running beginning of July next month. There will be tons of prints, books, limited editions items and more. There will also be a book release party July 17, 2010 at the Copro Gallery in the Bergamot Station, in Santa Monica. I will post more details soon.

Varnishing pieces

14 pieces for the show, 11 done and 3 more to finish. I've signed and varnished most of my pieces while still waiting for others to dry. I must say, I honestly dislike varnishing my work. There is a wax-like, flat quality that I like once the oil dries and looses once it's been treated. I wish I had more time to experiment with more ways of treating my pieces, but unfortunately I have to ship everything out by the end of this week. I've also been sitting in my studio too long and sniffing too much toxic flumes... better step away for a bit, before diving back in.

PLATES “Origin of Flesh” is Karen Hsiao’s newest body of work. These PLATES are morphological studies of the architecture in organisms and the human body. Her subjects undergo the influence of physical and moral modifications both in respect of its euphoric and aesthetic qualities. The subject conforms and shapes their body to a secondary layer of skin, infusing living tissue into inanimate intercellular substances adapting themselves into rare and valuable specimens.

It's crazy how in Japan most galleries only show their artist for two weeks on their off seasons (winter and fall), but in the summer, they only show them for one week. I have a good amount done for the show, but I'm working on doing more.

EYEMAZING magazine's current issue features Karen Hsiao's Rubber Duck

I just received this in the mail today!! EYEMAZING magazine did a wonderful 8 page spread on my upcoming book, Karen Hsiao : Rubber Duck, with text by Sashi Wasserman.

EYEMAZING is a Lucie Awards Winner for Best Photography Magazine of the year. They are also one of my favorite contemporary photo magazines out there. www.EYEMAZING.com

In this shot I used my cousin, Jennifer Hsiao for the "My first Fight" Chapter. I did all the makeup for her bruises.

On the leftt is my friend Tina, wearing FierceCouture Latex and an AMF eyepatch. The right is my friend Vima.

Left is model Katya wearing Baby Loves Latex with makeup by LB Benson, posing as her double (not easy to do in post). On the right is Jade, inspired by Trevor Brown's iconic "Little Miss Sticky Kiss".

Lastly, the model Dina with makeup by LB Benson on the left and Danni wearing FierceCouture on the right.

Updated Kellie Piece for Tokyo's show

My first pass at Kellie, and I really liked it. I'm going to work into it more over the weekend along with 5 other pieces I've started. All pieces are mix mediums, painted mostly with oil and wax. I will have more updates on my two person show in Japan soon.

I'm in NYC with my friend Danni Shinya and the weather has been sunny and warm ever since we got here. We went to meet with Jonathan LeVine today at his gallery, he has an amazing show currently up, show casing his 5 year anniversary group exhibition. If anyone is in the NYC area, I highly recommend checking it out!

Pre-shoot for Transmogrification

This past Wednesday I did a shoot with Kellie LaPlequa, she is in town and so is Louis Fleischauer. Louis made this outfit in mind for our Transmogrification project, which has been an on going series for about 4yrs now. I'm proud to say he and Kellie managed to out do themselves on Wednesday. The shoot went very well. Although the piercing took awhile, and we had to change the middle hook on Kellie's lower lip several times, the entertainment factor alone was enough to keep me amused. Louis's craftsmanship on the korset and neck brace was beyond words. Kellie was unbelievable and all the pictures came out great!

I just started this blog, and I intend to use it as often as I can. Updating everyone with my most current process and ideas I have in mind.
